Project turns PET plastic into sensors to detect pollutants in water

Pollutant detector sensors made from plastic

A group of researchers from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Oporto is transforming PET plastic, collected on the coast, which usually goes to landfill, into new materials for optical sensors (with fluorescent properties) to detect environmental pollutants in water. In this regard, researchers are developing an "innovative transformation process”, using water as a solvent (via hydrolysis) of the plastic associated to ohmic heating, "a technology widely used for food processing, preserving its properties.”
