Wuyuan Skywells Hotel

The essence of the past

Located in the interior of Huizhou, in the province of Jiangxi, in eastern China, the Wuyuan Skywells Hotel, a property dating back some 300 years, has not undergone a modernisation process, rather one of preservation, something that has not gone unnoticed by the eyes of the world, as the project continues to be abundantly awarded. The client was a couple formerly based in Shanghai, who used their savings to buy the property and then sell it, functioning not just as mere hoteliers, but as guardians of the past. As a result, one of the main requirements was to preserve not only the restorable artefacts but also to recreate the grandeur and elegance associated with the mansion, which, because of its remote location, was fortunate enough to survive the tumults of 20th-century China. The restoration, to designs by architects Andreas Thomczyk, Mika Woll and Amy Mathieson, has respected and honoured the history of local architecture, so that present and future generations can understand and appreciate traditional design.
