Kokillen Ekomuseum

The history of iron

The major challenge was to design a space that would relate to its programme and, at the same time, maintain its character and independence, representing a public building built to display the heritage of one of Sweden’s most prominent industries. The architects at the Bornstein Lyckefors studio met it in style. Surrounded by red wooden houses, the Kokillen Ekomuseum, a museum on the history of iron mining in the Bergslagen region, is a rounded building in black iron, with an angular ceiling, which celebrates the irregularity typical of the region’s old mines. Inside, with windows in all four directions, the museum has a cast iron core at its centre, with a permanently lit fireplace, to warmly welcome visitors.
