The chef’s kitchen in the eyes of the architect

In the eyes of the architect, how does one come up with the kitchen space in a house?Factors to be taken into account are the way a family lives in it, for example, whether or not they have all their meals in the kitchen space; whether or not the kitchen is integrated in the living room; the location; the relationship with the outdoors and with other spaces in the house; the lighting, natural and artificial; and the functional organisation of the kitchen space itself.

What is the importance of the kitchen in homes today?
The kitchen is now, and increasingly, a space that is not restricted to its functional character. Nowadays, it is also a space for socialising, and much more connected to the living room. On the other hand, it is one of the most intensely lived spaces in the house, and for that reason, it should be comfortable in its perceptive relationship with the indoor and outdoor spaces, in a continuity that is intended to be fluid.

The chef’s kitchen is increasingly requested in family homes. Why do you think that is?
The chef’s kitchen is often complemented with the "social kitchen”. When there’s space available, it might just be the ideal solution. In the first, functional issues predominate. In the second, socialising is the dominant factor – it’s the kitchen where you can have a light meal or a drink with friends while preparing the meal.

Which material(s) should not be lacking in a kitchen so that the end result is perfect and long-lasting?
This question has no simple answer. The range of materials and solutions on the market today is almost endless. I would prefer to highlight characteristics: quality, durability, easy to clean and sustainability.
