Set in the landscape, surrounded between sequoias and extensive oak trees, this modern and sustainable house – the California Ranch House –, can be found in the northern part of the US state. Designed by Malcolm Davis Architecture (MDa), the house develops from the existing construction, assuming itself totally sustainable: wood and other materials have been carefully reused, photovoltaic panels have been included, to produce electricity and heat water; as well as a passive solar energy system, which allows maximum use of exposure to the sun, generating natural ventilation for the house; and a system for reusing grey water to irrigate the entire property. All this, together with the extensive olive grove that has been planted to complement the existing vegetation, lends this property a zen style of being in balance with the world.
